Many growers these days just grow a small amount of medical marijuana for their own personal use. This many times includes the use of a micro grow cabinet or something similar. If you have a small grow and are starting to worry about the delicious odor of your buds maturing, you should probably start using a carbon filter to scrub the smell out of the air. That is why we are here to show you how to make your very own DIY micro grow carbon filter.

Total time to complete: ~15 min

Total Cost: $20 – with enough carbon to replace it up to 5 times over.

Compare to this carbon filter:

The materials you will need to make your own carbon filter include:

Supplies

Price

Duct Tape

$3.00

Activated Carbon

$6.00

Black womens sock (panty ho)

$2.00

2 mesh pencil/pen cups – 1 large and 1 small
(Note: I would buy these at Office Max, I didn’t see them at WalMart, Office Depot, or Staples although each store varies)

$4 x 2 = $8

I would recommend doing this somewhere easy to clean up. The carbon pieces tend to get all over the place so you don’t want to do it anywhere that it could damage the surface.

Here is the step by step guide to build you own DIY Micro Grow Carbon Filter:

1.) Pour some of the carbon into the bigger pencil cup. The goal here is to be able to fit the smaller pencil cup into the larger one and have it be level with the top of the larger pencil cup.

2.) Pull the smaller cup out and slip it bottom first into the sock.

3.) Place this smaller cup back inside the larger cup. You will need to fill the larger cup with the activated carbon so that it completely surrounds the smaller cup all the way up to the rim. A good way to do this is to pour it onto the top of the smaller cup with the sock relaxed, while holding onto the end of it. Then pull the sock up slightly and the carbon will fall around to the edges. Use your finger to help guide it in evenly.

4.) Now take the end of the sock and pull it back over the larger cup. Be careful not to pull on it too much at the end or it will dislodge the smaller cup.

5.) Now twist the end of the sock and pull it back up onto the end of the cup.

6.) To finish it off, I like to put a couple pieces of duct tape to secure the two pencil cups together.

7.) Now just secure your filter to your exhaust fan using your duct tape and you are set! It is generally recommended that you set it up so that the air is sucked through the filter (so putting the filter inside the grow space) rather than pushing the air through it.

Many growers of medical marijuana absolutely love the smell of that sweet sweet ganja. However, that doesn’t mean the neighbor likes that sweet aroma. They may take that smell as a strongly negative thing and could actually end up calling the police which would obviously create quite the headache for even the legal grower. I have heard countless stories of law enforcement taking legal grows because they didn’t check first. This can end up being huge losses for the grower. Instead of worrying about the odor given off by your flowering plants, it is generally recommended to use a carbon filter or something similar to remove the odor from the air.

Carbon filters use activated charcoal to clean the air of odors. Activated carbon is “activated” by an oxygenation process. The oxygen activates the charcoal by opening up millions of tiny pores between the carbon atoms. This opens up a lot of space for the carbon to “suck up” the odors put off by marijuana. This chemical bonding of the carbon atoms to the odor removes the odor from the air completely and traps it chemically to the surface of the charcoal.

Carbon filters come in a wide range of sizes. They can be several feet tall with a large diameter or they can be the size of a large cup. This obviously depends on the amount of air that you need to scrub clean. The more area and the more air you are moving (CFM), the bigger carbon filter you will need to properly filter the air of those unwanted odors. Most of the time the carbon filters you will end up buying are actually very simple pieces of equipment. They are typically in a cylindrical form with an open core. But within the walls of the filter, it is packed with that activated charcoal.

It is generally recommended to hook up your carbon filter inside your grow environment. This is to ensure that the air is being sucked through the filter, rather than pushed through. If you put the filter on the end of your exhaust where the air is being pushed out, it will keep the odor from getting out, but it will also severely limit your exhaust air flow. By sucking the air through the filter first, then exhausting it, you are able to maintain almost the same airflow as you had before adding the filter.

If you are looking for an awesome vaporizer, the Silver Surfer is being talked about all over the internet. It is one of the best available:

Cloning medical marijuana is the process of taking your medical marijuana genetics and creating a brand new plant that will be nearly identical to the plant that the clone was taken from. This is a very efficient way to have a continual stream of new plants. It is much faster than growing from seed and you will be guaranteed to have a female plant, where as when you grow from seed you will end up with half males which will just have to be thrown out. Cloning is a relatively simple process when done the right way.

The materials you will need to do the cloning process:

Clean, sharp razor blade

Small tupperware or cup

Rooting gel or powder

Here is your step-by-step cloning guide: 1.) Fill your tupperware or cup with de-chlorinated water with a pH 5-6. This is where you will put your fresh clippings immediately after cutting them from the plant.

2.) Look for newer, fresh shoots towards the lower part of the plant. The reason you prefer to cut your clones from the lower part of the plant is that part of the plant has more of the proper hormones for cloning. Select a branch and cut it right where it attaches to the bigger branch or stem. If it is a top, try to cut it as close to the new growth below it as possible.

Immediately put your clipping into the cup/tupperware of water while you take more clones.

3.) Once you have taken all the clones you need, it is time to prepare the clipping for entry into the clone machine. Take your clipping and make a 45 degree cut, this allows for the maximum surface area available for new root growth. Make sure to make your cut under water because if you make the cut in air, the trauma from the new cut makes the plant try to suck up extra water but since there is no water, it will just suck up air instead which can create air embolisms which can prevent optimum root growth.

You can also split the step by cutting up the middle of the clipping. This will create a maximum surface area of potential root formation.

4.) Dip your clipping into the rooting compound of your choice.

5.) Place your clipping into your foam insert or coco cube. Cut the 50% of the leaves off. This minimizes perspiration (loss of water through the plant leaf membrane) and keeps the clones from drying out so much.

6.) Place the clipping into your clone machine and turn it on. If your grow space has low humidity (less than 80%), you will want to use a humidity dome or anti wilt spray. A higher humidity helps the clippings root faster because the plants don’t transpire as much. Anti wilt does basically the same thing by sealing the leaves and minimizing transpiration. I also like to add a little bit of my root fertilizer (50% of regular amount) to the anti wilt spray. This can be absorbed through the plant leaves and speed the rooting process. To finish off my clone spray, I like to add a wetting agent which basically keeps the water from beading up and creates better coverage on the leaves.
Tips:

Keep the pH of your water at 5-6

Lights should be placed at a healthy distance, the clones don’t need much light energy

Temperatures should be kept at TEMP

If the leaves on the clipping start to yellow and die, don’t panic this is completely normal

If it takes longer than 14 days to have solid roots, you will want to change your water to avoid other stuff growing inside

I have trolled the internet to find any review of the Silver Surfer vaporizer that I could find. My job got really easy when all I could find were positive reviews! I stand by this vaporizer as the only vaporizer you will ever need. It is very high quality, and at such an affordable price, you really are getting the most bang for your buck.

First the basic information about the Silver Surfer Vaporizer:

The SSV is the most versatile, well designed, functional, and durable vaporizer on the market! And, the *only* vaporizer with artistic beauty!

Conserve your tobacco by as much as 40%-50%! Do the math, how long will it take to pay itself off? How many times will this thing pay its self off?

The SSV features a heater that is separated from the electronics to provide you with the cleanest vapor possible

Made in Colorado, USA

Features the highest quality engineered ceramic heater on the planet. The element is 100% encased in ceramic to prevent the oxidation of the heating element. This thing has the same crystalline structure as a ruby!

Only wand style vaporizer to offer the water-filtered mouth piece, which cools and moistens the vapor offering an even healthier way of vaporizing

The housing is made from 1/5 inch thick aluminum which is about as thick as 3 quarter dollars stacked. The housing will NEVER break! The housing has now been anodized to make the aluminum harder and give a nicer finish. The SSV logo is also laser engraved on the front!

Features an indicator light that brightens and dims as you adjust the temperature.

The best place to buy the Silver Surfer is definitely Vaporizer Giant. The lowest price I can find for this vaporizer is $249.00 on several different sites, but Vaporizer Giant gives you free 2 day air shipping, a free herb grinder, and some free herbal smoke.

Silver Surfer Reviews from Around the Web
1.) From Marijuana.com Forum
“I bought my Silver Surfer vapo last year after using my buddies quite a few times. Some of the features that rock this vapo are:
1. The way the whip approaches the heating element. As opposed to the wooden box style, where your whip comes in at a downward angle and you tend to dump your load if your not careful, with the Silver Surfer you approach in an upward motion and lose nothing,…. except your mind!
2. They added a friggin bong, which they call an ice chamber, but look at it…a bong. My stuff tastes so damn good vapoing through this. Clean, nothing at all harsh. I love it.
3. Quick change screen in the whip. I usually clean my stuff with alcohol so rarely change a screen, but O so much easier getting it in and out with this style whip. They also added a hands free whip, which I have yet to try.
4. The look…Stylish as a nice center piece/conversation piece

I’ve been smoking for over 30 years, so it was hard as hell to give up my pipe/lighter/bong/joint. And i pretty much have, except for an occasional gathering that calls for it. But shit, we have an invertor and bring our Surfers on the road. Sitting in the parking lot of a PJ concert last summer we just vapo’d away, people absolutely oblivious to what we were doing.
I will probably request to be buried with mine. Like my friends will let in go under ground
if your interest in more info…and yes they are pricey, but I’ll have mine forever and never need anything else, except for maybe a few custom parts here and there.”

2.) From Vaporizer.org
“The silver surfer vaporizer is quite unique courtesy of the slanted aluminum design and the hand-crafted glass temperature knob and patent-pending glass heater cover.
Upon first sight I couldn’t tell how to use the thing, but its unique slanted shape allows you to place the whip in an upward direction against the heat source. This feature is an obvious solution to the awkward and often wasteful downward position many other whip style herbal vaporizers available currently use.
7th Floor (the company producing the Silver Surfer Vaporizer) takes it to the next level by providing a number of unique accessory options available for it. The hands free device actually holds the wand to the heater for you when you just want to sit back and relax, another accessory is the aromatop which the manufacturers say will let you use the Silver Surfer as a fragrance diffuser whilst you use it as a vaporizer.
The Quick Change Wand is the third custom accessory offered for the Silver Surfer Vaporizer and the hour-glass shape of the Silver Surfer wand prevents the screen from falling to the bottom stopping any problematic screen removals in the future.”

3.)From VaporizerGuy.com
“I find this to be a really nice looking vaporizer. This vaporizer actually works as great as it looks. The name is what attracted me to this model; Silver Surfer. Each Silver Surfer Vaporizer (sometimes referred to as SSV) is handmade in Colorado Springs, USA by 7th Floor LLC.

I found this to be a vaporizer that was very efficient; maximum effective with little herb consumption. This alone saves money and helps to preserve your herb supply.
The Silver Surfer’s housing is made from 1/5 inch thick anodized aluminum, which they claim will last a lifetime with proper care. The ceramic heating element is claimed to be the best on the market. It has been engineered to last longer and get hot faster than anything else.”

4.) A video review from youtube.com

Some Customer Testimonials from Around the Web:

“Wow… I just used this vaporizer for the first time and I can truly say it is unbelievable! Works very well… looks great and its easy to use. 5 stars!”

“I owned a easy vape before and decided I was ready for an upgrade. Easy vape treated me great as a beginner and Silver Surfer is no harder. A lot cooler looking and a bit stronger of a hit than the easy vape. Also, I love the fact that it comes with a bag so I can put it away when I need to.”

“Brilliant machine. Does what it says on the tin. No flashy gimmicks just a solid heat element and perfectly easy to use. Proper solid construction. Love mine!”

“The Silver Surfer Vaporizer comes with an adjustable ceramic quartz heating element. The vaporizer comes in many colours and made from hand crafted marble, looks way cool. Rather a work of art, I must say! It only takes up to 3 minutes to warm up and vaporizing begins soon after. Includes a cool hands free kit, you get a huge number of hits without re loading. Fairly cheap and comes with a three year warranty.”

Curing your medical marijuana is the final process of all the hard work and labor you put into your growing process. Curing is the slow drying phase that follows the full, open air drying phase of harvest. Curing allows the moisture of the bud to disperse evenly around the bud and allows the bud to slowly dry out at an even rate which allows for maximum psychoactive THC. Curing also gives the bud a much smoother smoke and it will burn very evenly.

So how do you know when it is time to start curing? The best, easiest way to test this is to try to snap a branch of your drying buds. If the branch breaks and snaps, the bud is dry enough to start curing. If the stem bends, there is still too much moisture present in the plant and it will need to be dried more before starting the curing process.

Curing marijuana can be accomplished using a variety of containers, however the most popular are the glass canning jars with metal lids that have a rubber seal on them. This is because these jars completely seal the bud in and many growers prefer to use glass over plastic because they say that the plastic can leave undesirable flavors in the bud. However, if you have a large harvest, most likely you will need to use some type of plastic container in order to efficiently cure your harvest.

The process of curing itself simply involves sealing your buds in the container as to allow the moisture to redistribute itself evenly among all the buds in the container, as well as within each bud itself. Some moisture will also be slowly leached into the air so you will want to open the lid to your container 3-6 times a day for 5-10 minutes. This will allow fresh air into the container and will allow the more humid stagnate air to escape. Continue this process for 2 days, or 2 weeks depending on how wet your bud is until it reaches a “dry” consistency that is preferred for smoking.

Special Note: It is not necessarily recommended to artificially speed along the curing process. This process gives the bud its final touch of flavor and adds an additional amount of psychoactivity to the remaining THC that can be hampered if the drying or curing process is rushed. It should be a goal to make the process take as long as it needs to, in order to ensure the maximum potential of your harvest. If you are in a time crunch, a faster curing method may be used, just be aware that the quality will be slightly lower than if you were to cure the bud at it’s more natural rate. If you are in a hurry and want to speed along the curing process, see our quick guide to do so: Faster Marijuana Curing

The Silver Surfer Vaporizer is hands down the BEST available these days. Head shop owners agree that this is the best bang for your buck:
Curing allows the moisture of the bud to disperse evenly around the bud and allows the bud to slowly dry out at an even rate which allows for maximum psychoactive THC. Curing also gives the bud a much smoother smoke and it will burn very evenly. For some tips and tricks to curing marijuana, click here: How to Cure Marijuana

Here is a quick and easy method for faster curing of marijuana:

You will need the following supplies:

Mason jar, or similar container

Wad of toilet paper or paper towel

1 plastic bag

Small kitchen knife

1.) Place the bag on top of the jar, in preparation to make small cuts/holes in the plastic

2.) Make several cuts in the plastic while holding it tightly against the rim of the jar.

3.) Place the wad of paper in between the lid and the plastic

4.) Screw the lid on, sealing the jar with the paper wad separated from your buds at the top of the jar. This dry paper will help remove more of the moisture from the jar without having to open up the jar so much. Just open it once a day and replace the moist paper wad with a fresh dry one until curing is complete.

Deep water culture hydroponics is a pretty popular method of indoor hydroponics these days. It is a relatively easy system to setup and use, but you still see some really good results. Deep water culture hydroponics is where you put your plant roots into an oxygen rich nutrient solution as the medium itself. So no use of any hydroton, rockwool, or soil to grow your plant in, just the nutrient solution itself. For this reason there are very minimal moving parts and the chances of the system failing are very low.

Deep water culture or DWC hydroponics is particularly popular with cloning. DWC clone machines are very easy to make, and are even easier to maintain so many growers like to use them. Many times a grower will build one out of a 2-5 gallon bucket, an air pump, an air stone, and some net pots. People really like the dwc cloners because all you have to do is make sure your air pump is functioning properly, then make sure there is enough water in your basin. Some growers decide to use a rooting fertilizer and many others just use de-chlorinated tap water, kept at a pH between 5 and 6.

The magic comes from the air stone which is placed at the bottom of your grow container. This air stone is what provides the much needed oxygen that the developing root system craves so much. If the water doesn’t have enough oxygen, the roots will rot and the plant will die. So it is very important to make sure you create an oxygen rich environment in order to have maximum cloning success.

The cloning process should only take about two weeks, or until you see solid white roots forming out of the bottom of your cutting. From here, you can actually add nutrients to your cloner if you would like to start vegging them right there. Otherwise you can transfer the new clone to another system, whether it be deep water culture, hydroponic, aeroponic, or even soil. That new clone will be ready to flourish in whatever system you choose.

One very popular way of cloning medical marijuana is by using a deep water culture (DWC) or many times called a bubble cloner system. Bubble cloners use the deep water culture technology to both provide high success rates, as well as giving the grower a low maintenance system. Bubble cloners work by placing your clippings directly into the highly oxygenated water in your bubble cloner system. It is very important to make sure that the water or nutrient solution you are using to clone has a high level of oxygen, as well as a good pH range of 5-6 to ensure optimal growth potential. This type of system is very easy to use and easy to maintain. You don’t have to worry about sprinkler heads being clogged. The system is so simple you really just have to maintain a good pH and make sure there is enough water to keep the clippings submersed.

Total time to build the system: 30-60 minutes

Total cost to build the system: $25 <—- Compare to the Daisy Cloner – 8 Site Aeroponic Cloner (Same size, but aeroponics instead of DWC)

The recommended tools for this project are:

Drill

2″ drill bit

1/4″ drill bit

Here is the step-by-step guide to build your own 8 site bubble cloner: 1.) Either drill your 8 clone sites into the lid using the 2″ drill bit (highly recommended), or trace your mesh net pots onto the lid and cut out using a serrated knife (get the cut started using your drill to drill a hole into the inside of the circle). Make sure to place your plant sites to the outside of the lid to be able to fit all your spots in. (Optional: put one more plant spot in the center of the lid) 2.) Drill a 1/4″ hole into the lid where you will run your air tube. Clean off any debris/slivers left from drilling or cutting. 3.) Run air hose to the bottom of the bucket and connect the air stone. If you want you can use hot glue to secure the air stone to the center bottom of the bucket. 4.) Place inserts with a new cutting of your plant, place the pots in the plant sites, connect the air tube to the pump, fill with room temperature water with a pH of 5-6, and turn on! Usage Tips

Keep pH of water between 5-6

Run your air pump 24/7

Use of cloning nutrients is optional

Use of a humidity dome will help keep humidity higher, but you can also use an Anti Wilt solution that you spray on the leaves to help them from losing too much water through transpiration

Aeroponics is a very popular method of indoor growing. It is very comparable to hydroponics but it still has some characteristics that separates it from the rest of the crowd. Hydroponics is distinguished from other types of growing by having complete control over the nutrient supply to the plant. By not using soil, the grower is able to make specific measurements and adjustments to modify the nutrients the plant is receiving. Aeroponics follows along these same lines, so it could be said that it is a type of hydroponics.

The big difference between aeroponics and hydroponics then, is really the medium you are growing your plants in. Aeroponics, as the name might imply, uses air as the growing medium where as hydroponics uses coco, hydroton, rockwool, or other comparable mediums which the plant roots grow into. Aeroponic systems work by hanging the root system into a high humidity spacious area, typically with some type of sprinkler system that keeps the roots wet and supplied with ample nutrients.

By using air as your growing medium, you are able to maximize oxygen availability to the roots of your plants. This can be a great advantage and does lead to increased growth in shorter periods of time. By being able to completely control the nutrients being delivered to the plant, combined with the very high level of oxygen, the grower is able to see growth and development unparalleled to any other system. Most growers would agree that the aeroponic system is the most efficient, highest yielding system available for these very reasons.

However, it isn’t all positives with this system. If you have problems or mess something up, it can make that much of a bigger impact on your success. This is a very touchy system, and because the plants are hanging in air, if you have any problem with your pump or sprinkler system you could easily kill a plant in a very short period of time. This problem isn’t nearly as severe with other systems because the growth medium gives the grower a buffer in cases of big mistakes.

By evaluating both the positives and negatives of this system, you can decide for yourself if it is the type of system you would like to use. I would strongly recommend building your own system, because it can be done for less than $100 and it really doesn’t take much time and is not difficult to do.

Deep water culture hydroponics, commonly referred to as DWC, is a very popular method of cultivation. This type of system is relatively easy to use and is very low maintenance making it a great system for both the seasoned gardener as well as people new to indoor growing. This system can be used for cloning, mother plants, vegetative stages, and flowering stages of plant growth. The most popular ways to use deep water culture hydro is for both the cloning stages as well as for mother plants.

DWC hydroponics works by hanging your root system or clipping directly into an oxygen rich nutrient solution. The oxygen is provided through air stones that sit at the bottom of the reservoir. If you were to put your plant roots into stagnate nutrient solution, the plant would soon develop root rot and die. Oxygen is very important to the development and growth of your plant so a lack of oxygen will cause serious issues. If you need to, add an extra air stone or two to the bottom of your nutrient container in order to ensure proper oxygen content in the water.

As mentioned earlier, deep water culture is very popular for mother plants. This system is perfect for this situation because the plant is supplied with plenty of nutrient solution with very low maintenance. Because it is a mother plant, you don’t have to worry about it getting optimal nutrients and oxygen because all you need are the fresh clippings. Because the deep water culture bucket system is so low maintenance, it is the favorite for many growers around the world.

One popular system is the homemade DWC bucket system. This system is built using a 2-5 gallon paint bucket, a mesh net pot, an air stone, and an air pump. It is so simple that it can be built in less than an hour. You simply have to cut a hole out of the paint bucket lid to put your mesh net pot, drill a hole for the air tube and run your air stone to the bottom of the bucket. Then plug in your air pump, put your plant or clipping into the net mesh bucket using either hydroton or foam inserts and you are set. It is that simple!

With material costs so low and the time needed to build such a system, it only makes sense to have your mother plants in a deep water culture bucket system.
